I think I remember reading or hearing something about doctors handing out prescriptions for produce (at the farmer's market, instead of prescribing medicine). Do you have any information on this?

Prescriptions for Produce?

I think this was in a New York Times recently. From what I remember, this is taking place in Massachusetts. Basically, health clinics are writing prescriptions that can be used at the Farmer's Market, instead of at the pharmacy. The idea is to allow low-income individuals to use coupons to buy groceries.
Founded by CAVU (CavuFoundation.org), the program will hopefully expand across the country, and into grocery stores, if it's successful. It will prove particularly useful, in the long term, in helping Americans eat more healthily, bringing produce and vegetables to areas that typically don't grow them, and hopefully reduce the obesity rate that currently plagues us.
